The truth is the hillside letters are first and foremost symbols of school and community pride dating back to 1905. Early-day pilots found the hillside letters useful at times; however, any aeronautical value associated with the school and community letters came after the fact. |

| Let me explain why convection does not apply Fri, 13 Jun 2008 01:37:00 PST The discussion over the past few days was started because I made a statement that the ground loses heat two ways, by conduction and radiation, adding that I would ignore convection, the third way heat transfer can occur, because it didn't apply in the case of the ground cooling below air temperature on a clear night. The ground doesn't directly lose heat by convection (convection only occurs in a fluid or a gas), but that doesn't mean that convection can't influence the rate of heat loss of the ground (no ... I am not backpedaling ... stay with me for a minute.) Convection can carry warm air away from a hot object, allowing the circulation to bring cooler air down, which can help cool the object more (by conduction). |
